Hungary is facing a major agricultural crisis as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been confirmed on a cattle farm in Kisbajcs. This marks the first outbreak in over five decades, raising serious concerns for the livestock industry and prompting strict emergency measures to contain the virus.

The National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) confirmed the presence of FMD after testing a farm with 1,400 cattle that showed classic symptoms earlier this month. In response, Dr. Szabolcs Pásztor, the national chief veterinarian, has ordered the immediate closure of the affected farm and launched an epidemiological investigation to trace the source of the infection.

To prevent further spread, authorities have implemented severe restrictions, including a ban on transporting susceptible animals. This is crucial in limiting the economic damage that FMD can cause, as the virus spreads rapidly and requires drastic measures such as culling entire herds when an infection is detected.

The focus now is on containment and prevention, with officials urging farmers and livestock owners to remain vigilant. Anyone who notices signs of illness in their animals must report it immediately to veterinarians to help control the outbreak.
