Bosnia and Herzegovina Opens Meat Imports from South America

Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) has now allowed the import of frozen red meat from South America for processing. This move comes as a response to supply shortages in the European market.

Why the Change?

Meat processors in the Federation of BiH have been struggling to get enough raw materials from the EU. Global supply disruptions, fewer livestock, and farm closures in Europe have made sourcing meat difficult. To address this, BiH authorities worked to open up new markets.

Government Action

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations, along with the Veterinary Office of BiH, took steps to clear obstacles for meat imports from Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. After two months of efforts, all necessary procedures were completed, and trade agreements have already been put in place.

Ensuring Quality and Safety

Imported frozen red meat will undergo strict veterinary and sanitary inspections. The meat must not be older than six months and must meet safety and microbiological standards before being used for processing.

Expanding Market Options

This decision provides an alternative supply source for BiH’s meat industry, reducing reliance on the EU market. The government remains committed to exploring new trade opportunities to strengthen the local economy and maintain a stable supply chain.
