Transforming Waste into Fuel

In a remarkable shift towards sustainability, JBS has managed to turn what was once considered waste into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Over the past two years, JBS has repurposed an impressive 1.2 million tons of beef tallow and pork grease from its operations in the US, Canada, and Australia to create SAF and other renewable fuels. In 2022 alone, approximately 465,000 tons of tallow and grease were utilized, and this number surged to over 700,000 tons in 2023.

A Cleaner Alternative for Aviation

SAF offers a significant environmental benefit by reducing carbon emissions by up to 70%. It can also be blended with regular jet fuel in proportions of up to 50%. Jason Weller, JBS's Global Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasizes that by repurposing animal waste, JBS is aiding the aviation sector in decreasing its reliance on fossil fuels, thereby significantly reducing its carbon footprint. 🌍

JBS's subsidiary in Brazil, Friboi, is delving into the potential of using animal by-products for aviation fuel. This research is crucial as it could further amplify the positive impact of JBS’s sustainability initiatives.

Sustainable Fuel for Shipping and Trucking

JBS is also making notable progress in the shipping and trucking industries. In Brazil, its Biopower division has successfully tested biodiesel made from animal residuals. A truck running exclusively on this biodiesel (B100) has traveled over 120,000 kilometers, demonstrating performance comparable to diesel but with up to 80% lower carbon emissions.
