A new investment for halal beef
The Government of Canada has announced new funding to support halal beef production. The money will help Atlantic Beef Products Inc. (ABPI) upgrade its processing and packaging systems.
The total investment is C$2.26 million. The project will take place at ABPI’s facility in Prince Edward Island.
Where the money comes from
The funding is provided through the Kosher and Halal Investment Program.
This program helps beef and veal processors buy modern equipment so they can:
Produce more halal and kosher products
Improve food safety
Work faster and more efficiently
What will be upgraded at the plant
The project focuses on better technology inside the processing and packaging lines. Key improvements include:
Steam vacuum systems to improve cleanliness and hygiene
Modern cutting and meat recovery tools to reduce waste
New packaging machines for retail-ready halal beef
In-line X-ray inspection to improve food safety and quality checks
These upgrades are designed to make the plant safer, cleaner, and more productive.
Why this matters for Canada
ABPI is the only federally registered beef processing plant east of Quebec. It can process up to 750 cattle each week. Because of this, the plant plays an important role in the regional food supply.
With better equipment, ABPI will be able to:
Meet rising demand for halal beef in Canada
Support both retail stores and foodservice businesses
Strengthen Canada’s domestic meat supply chain
The government also says the investment supports the Buy Canadian Policy, which encourages the use of Canadian-made products and services.
Growing demand for halal food
Demand for halal food is growing in Canada and around the world. This growth is driven by:
Larger Muslim populations
More interest in certified and trusted food products
Stronger focus on traceability and compliance
For packaging and processing companies, this means more attention on certification rules, clear labeling, and safe handling.
Looking ahead
This investment is part of a wider effort by Canada to modernise food processing facilities. By improving technology and packaging, the government aims to support local businesses, protect food safety, and help Canadian products compete at home and abroad.
In simple terms, the funding helps one key plant do its job better—producing safe, certified halal beef for a growing market.
