Serbian police have stopped a major public health threat after uncovering 40 tons of chicken meat and products contaminated with salmonella. The discovery was made at a poultry farm in Ćićevac, where the meat lacked proper documentation and labeling.

Authorities say the suspects — a father and son — had been banned from selling the meat after veterinary tests confirmed salmonella contamination in late July. However, just days later, inspectors found that some of the infected poultry had already been sold and transported to a business in Sikirica.

Investigators also discovered mismatches between invoices and the actual stock, as well as piles of slaughter waste dumped at a city landfill, posing additional environmental risks. Around 70% of the seized meat was not marked in accordance with regulations.

The contaminated meat will be destroyed, and the company involved has been shut down. Officials are continuing their investigation to track everyone linked to the illegal sales and to review the company’s entire business operations.
