In a shocking discovery, food crime officers and police uncovered a large stash of unsafe meat in unrefrigerated vans in London. The National Food Crime Unit (NFCU) revealed that the vans were carrying 48 sheep carcasses, processed in unsanitary conditions and without proper traceability.
What Was Found?
The meat, believed to be illegal, had undergone a smoking process while retaining its skin—a method raising serious health and safety concerns. Traceability, a key requirement in food safety to track meat from farm to fork, was entirely absent. Additionally, the meat was being stored in unrefrigerated vans, which can lead to harmful bacteria growth.
Neil Castle, deputy head of the NFCU, highlighted the dangers: “The meat lacks traceability and was being kept in unsanitary conditions, posing a food safety risk.”
Who Was Involved?
Five men were arrested at the scene and later released under investigation. The NFCU, working alongside police, seized the unsafe meat and launched further investigations to address the illegal meat trade.
Why It’s Dangerous
Without refrigeration and proper hygiene, meat can quickly become unsafe to eat. Bacteria like salmonella and E. coli can thrive in such conditions, leading to serious health risks for anyone consuming the meat.
What Happens Next?
The NFCU and its partners are determined to crack down on illegal practices in the food industry. Their efforts are aimed at protecting the public and ensuring only safe, traceable meat reaches consumers.
In the meantime, authorities are urging people to buy meat only from trusted sources and report any suspicious activities related to food production.
This discovery serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by illegal food operations and the importance of strict safety checks in the supply chain.
