Hungary’s Meatpacking Power Move: Kométa Goes Big in Kaposvár
Kométa's ambitious expansion in Kaposvár is setting the stage for Hungary to become a key player in European meat production.

A Mega Investment in a Modest Town
Kaposvár, a quiet town in southwestern Hungary, is about to see a major industrial transformation. Italian-owned meat processing company Kométa has announced a bold expansion plan that could position the town—and the country—at the forefront of the European meat industry.
Logistics Center Heads South
A central part of the plan involves relocating Kométa’s logistics center from Budapest to Kaposvár. Alongside this move, the company will construct a 30-meter-high, fully automated warehouse—an investment that marks a clear shift toward scale and efficiency.
Smarter Systems and Sustainable Energy
Kométa’s growth isn’t just physical. Starting in June, the company will introduce a new IT system aimed at streamlining operations. It also plans to install a gas engine generator, suggesting a move toward more resilient and potentially greener energy solutions.
2030: The Big Picture
This expansion is part of a long-term strategy, with the full project expected to be completed by 2030. Managing Director Giacomo Pedranzini emphasized the company’s relentless drive to grow, saying they are never satisfied and always striving for more.
Strategic Support and Broader Implications
The expansion aligns with Hungary’s national goal of revitalizing its industrial base through the construction of 150 new factories. Kaposvár’s mayor, Károly Szita, has voiced strong support, expressing confidence that Kométa will become a major European player by the end of the decade.
A New Chapter for Hungarian Industry
Kométa’s move signals more than company growth—it’s a statement about Hungary’s evolving role in Europe’s food production landscape. As Kaposvár prepares to house one of the continent’s leading meat processing hubs, the country is taking a confident step toward economic transformation and regional influence.
