Food Prices in Iran Soar: Meat and Rice Costs Skyrocket
Iran is facing a sharp rise in food prices, with meat and rice becoming unaffordable for many families.

Meat Prices Hit Record Highs
Red meat costs in Tehran have surged. Boneless lamb loin now costs 10 million rials ($11) per kilogram, while lamb fillet reaches 18 million rials ($19.5). Veal is priced at 9.2 million rials ($10). Online prices are even higher.
Experts blame supply shortages, rising farming costs, and currency fluctuations. Meat prices have been increasing for years, with a 93% jump recorded in 2024. Consumption is dropping, raising concerns about nutrition.
Rice Prices Spike
Iranian rice now sells for over 2 million rials ($2.2) per kilogram. The government is trying to stabilize prices, but hoarding and market fluctuations are driving costs up. Prices have risen 83% in four months, with Tarom rice up 44%.
Iran imports a million tons of rice annually but has only secured 500,000 tons this year. With Nowruz and Ramadan approaching, demand is expected to rise further.
Inflation Burden on Families
Food inflation is making life harder. One-third of essential food items have seen price hikes between 30%-50%, while some have increased by over 50%. Meanwhile, wages remain low, with the minimum wage for a worker with two children at just $120 per month.
What’s Next?
The rising costs of food and essentials are putting a strain on Iranian households. Without economic reforms, the situation is unlikely to improve. Immediate action is needed to control inflation and stabilize the market.
