Breaking News

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Croatia has confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza, subtype H5N1, in the Ivanić Grad area of Zagreb County. The discovery has prompted immediate action to contain and eradicate the disease.

Outbreak Confirmed in Ivanić Grad

On December 3, 2024, bird flu was confirmed at a poultry facility in Ivanić Grad. In response, the State Inspectorate initiated strict control measures, including the culling of all remaining poultry, disinfection of the site, and other containment efforts. The Ministry stated that efforts to determine the pathogenicity of the virus are ongoing.

To prevent the further spread of the disease, restriction zones have been established around the affected area. These zones will be adjusted as needed, depending on the evolving epidemiological situation.

Earlier Cases in Captive Birds

This outbreak follows a similar confirmation of the H5N1 subtype in captive birds in Zagreb on November 28, 2024. Those cases also led to the implementation of disease control measures and investigations into the virus's pathogenicity.

Nationwide Preventive Measures

Since November 18, 2023, Croatia has been under a mandatory order to prevent the occurrence and spread of avian influenza. These measures include:

  • Mandatory containment of all poultry and captive birds to prevent contact with wild birds.

  • Separate housing for waterfowl (ducks and geese) from other poultry.

  • Strict hygiene and biosecurity measures in poultry farms.

Farmers and bird owners are urged to monitor their animals closely, report any changes in health or unusual deaths immediately, and rigorously adhere to biosecurity protocols.

Looking Ahead

The Ministry has assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will take additional steps as necessary to protect both animal and public health. Updated information on restriction zones and epidemiological developments will be provided as the situation evolves.

This outbreak serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in managing diseases that can affect both animals and, potentially, humans. Authorities are calling for cooperation from all stakeholders to curb the spread of the virus.

Stay tuned for further updates.
