The Australian red meat industry had a historic year in 2024, setting new export records across all categories—beef, lamb, mutton, and goatmeat. With a total of 2.24 million tonnes shipped to 104 countries, Australia solidified its position as a leading global supplier of high-quality red meat.

Surging Demand and Favorable Conditions

A combination of increased domestic supply and strong international demand propelled exports to unprecedented levels. According to Meat & Livestock Australia’s global supply analyst, Tim Jackson, the growth was largely driven by a mature cattle herd and sheep flock, leading to higher slaughter rates. Additionally, global supply dynamics worked in Australia’s favor, with the United States experiencing its lowest cattle herd numbers in 72 years due to prolonged drought conditions.

Despite economic uncertainties worldwide, the trust in Australia’s red meat quality and its extensive free trade agreements (FTAs) helped maintain strong demand. A remarkable 87% of all red meat exports were directed to countries with FTAs, with beef exports leading the way at 95%.
