Pakistan Eyes $200m Halal Meat Export Boost with Malaysia
Islamabad sets sights on a $200 million meat export opportunity with Malaysia through fast-tracked reforms in disease control, certification, and supply chain coordination.

Pakistan is gearing up to capture a $200 million Halal meat export opportunity with Malaysia, marking a strategic move to expand its footprint in high-value international markets.
At a meeting on Pakistan–Malaysia Cooperation in the Meat Sector chaired by Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, officials outlined plans to overcome key hurdles—including the ban on bone-in meat exports and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) constraints—that currently limit market access.
Special Assistant on Industries Haroon Akhtar Khan noted that Pakistan’s meat exports could swiftly reach $200 million if these barriers are addressed, pointing out that India retains a competitive edge by exporting bone-in meat.
To fast-track progress, the government has adopted a two-phase approach: an initial report within four days to identify actionable steps, followed by a comprehensive policy within ten days to ensure long-term sectoral growth.
Minister Jam Kamal Khan described Malaysia as a “low-hanging fruit” for Pakistan’s meat industry, urging stakeholders to strengthen price competitiveness, compliance, and supply reliability. The new policy will focus on disease management, Halal certification, and infrastructure upgrades in coordination with provinces.
National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain pledged federal support for livestock health and feedlot improvements, highlighting ongoing initiatives in Punjab as models for nationwide rollout.
Four committees have been formed to focus on disease control, breed enhancement, feedlot development, and export facilitation. The Ministry of Science and Technology will also ensure adherence to global Halal and quality standards, while Sindh’s ports are expected to play a crucial role in export logistics.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Jam Kamal Khan emphasized that Pakistan aims to position itself as a trusted global supplier of premium Halal meat through evidence-based planning and strong public-private collaboration.
